Map of Yggdrasil (Nine Worlds) by solaroid Map of Yggdrasil (Nine Worlds) by solaroid
This is an illustration I did of the Nine Worlds from Norse mythology for my maps project. I wanted to do a simple, informative map because I was baffled by how little most people know about it compared to Greek/Roman/Egyptian mythology.

I used the Norwegian names instead of the Norse/Icelandic ones because that’s how I know them as and is a lot more relatable to me (ek snakkur ikkur islendur!) and the descriptions are in English, but there’s a full Norwegian version around somewhere…!

You can read more about the map over at my Tumblr.

This is a GREAT map! I'm currently researching Norse mythology, and this is my favorite map of the Yggdrasil so far!

Great job!

The way they're described seems like you can just walk between them.

This is extremely helpful! I'm making a presentation for my English class (I'm German) about Norse Mythology and this is really good for explaining the Nine Worlds to my classmates and your explanations on tumblr clarified some things for me!

Nidhogg is there. He's just shown as a giant snake in the image because that's what he looked like. At least, more like that than a european dragon

Absolutely right! He is called an 'orm' in Norwegian and to me that is more of a giant serpent rather than a traditional dragon!  :D

Yeah, that's wear the word Wyrm came from. Most people say it as Wee-rm and just think of it as a really big dragon, but it's really just more like Worm or Wurm because dragons back then were giant scaly worm/serpents, like you said.

I get really happy when people, like you, know about it, I always have to explain why the Midgard Serpent and Nidhogg aren't dragons!

Heh, thanks! I didn't realize that you were the artist at the time, so I probably would have assumed you knew that if I had, but it's cool that people know stuff and whatnot! Although, I'm pretty sure wyrm is still technically a dragon. Dragon is a really wide term. Although I agree Jörmundgandr (Jörmundgand? Don't remember much norse conjugation) would be more of a sea serpent than a dragon. Right?
But about the map, isn't helheim between jotunheim and midgard because that is the first place to be invaded during ragnarok? Maybe I have to go back over that, but waht do you say?
And also, the svartalf are the dwarves and the dark elves, because they are the same thing, aren't they? So it's just kinda redundant to write both?

Hmm, I'll answer in points! :D

- Wyrm CAN be a dragon, I guess, in English. It's just that in Norwegian, Swedish and Danish - orm is DEFINITELY used for a snake/serpent. There are Scandinavian words for 'dragon' and I've only ever seen the use of 'dragon' in Norse mythology on English translations and it just makes it very Tolkien and D&D for me... which to me it distinctively is not.

- About Helheim (and all the locations) I decided to go very VERY literal to where the locations are. All information about them is very vague (because cosmic dimensions and silly Snorre!) so it's up to every artist and theorist how they want to approach it. All I had going for me are stuff like that Niflheim is definitely to the north and Muspelheim south and that Helheim "lies in Niflheim, under the third root of Yggdrasil'. Then again Norse mythology is very self-contradictory and suddenly everything is retconned :P

- On Svartalv, dwarves and dark elves are two different races, who live on two different worlds (Svartalfheim and Nidavellir) but I just decided to make them into one because I had to keep it to nine worlds and I could've sworn I read somewhere they aren't that far away from each other. :P

Are the locations placed where you put them for artistic purposes, or is it more literal using sources like the Eddas that detail the Norse cosmology?

Found small tidbits in the Eddas and Wiki that mentioned where they were placed, so I put them there very literally!
